Folly Quarter's Laura McAllister wins STEM honor [West Friendship]

Folly Quarter Middle School eighth grade student Laura McAllister has received the prestigious Lynn Collins Award in Mathematics. "Thrilled" is the way Laura's parents Nancy and Paul McAllister are feeling over this honor which Laura received during the Howard County Public School's Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fair and festival on March 1 at Long Reach High School.

Laura earned this high honor based on her STEM project and presentation which was titled "Who's Going Through Your Emails?" The event was attended by over 1,000 people who enjoyed the more than 150 displays and exhibits by students in Howard County.

Laura's math teacher Susan Ewart is beaming for McAllister and her science teacher Carrie Marusich, who nominated Laura as a "STEM" presenter, is glowing. Congratulations Laura.

Don't forget. This is the weekend for daffodils in bloom at Whipps Historic Garden Park in Ellicott City. The annual Daffodil Day at Whipps is set for April 12, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 3651 St. John's Lane.

On tap will be horticultural presentations by Howard County Master Gardeners, entertainment by the Marriotts Ridge High School Madrigals, a Living History Enactment and advice galore from the volunteer Master Gardeners. Potted daffodils, hyacinths, tulips, crocuses, hellebores and Virginia bluebells for sale, as well as a raffle at 3 p.m.

The community is invited to a Palm Sunday service, with blessings of the palms, at noon in the Chapel at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road.

The roster of Easter services at St. James Methodist Church has arrived. Pastor Katie Saari welcomes the community to join in for a Holy Thursday service at 7:30 p.m. on April 17 at St. James, 12470 Old Frederick Road, followed by a Good Friday service on April 18 at Rockland United Methodist Church, 8971 Chapel Drive in Ellicott City. Easter Sunday services include a 6:30 a.m. Sunrise Service in the Chapel in the Woods at St. James as well as an 9:30 a.m. Easter service at St. James and am 11 a.m. Easter service at Rockland United Methodist.

"They're back." The Kids Nearly New Sale is back one more time this spring. The ultimate children's sale is set for April 12, 8 a.m to 1 p.m., at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship.
