Warm welcome ready at West Friendship Elementary [West Friendship]

West Friendship Elementary School is the site of an Open House on Aug. 21, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. A perfect way to introduce the school to incoming students. Staff and faculty will be on hand to welcome students and their families.

Principal Aaron Tark, Assistant Principal Ann Steger, Principal's Secretary Penny Jones and Teacher's Secretary Colleen Green will all be on hand to welcome the children.


Just two days into the school year and already the fourth and fifth grade students at West Friendship Elementary are in for a treat. On Aug. 26, the students will hear the sounds of the Army Field Band during a presentation at the school. Now that 's the way to kick off the school year.

What a local fire department! So much excitement on the Midway during the 32nd annual West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department Parade on Aug. 9 during the Howard County Fair. Thank you, Station 3.

Love music? St. James United Methodist Church is in search of a part time director of music. Candidates should have earned a music degree and have experience with church music. Candidates with extensive experience in church music may be considered without a degree in music. The church has an average attendance of 65 people during services. The right candidate will personally direct the adult choir and coordinate a variety of music programs at the church with an expected schedule of approximately seven hours each week. Interested? The Howard County Antique Farm Machinery celebrates its 20th anniversary this month. Similarly, the West Friendship-based Howard County Living Farm Heritage Museum is celebrating a 10th anniversary this month.

Marie Miller, L'Angelus and Erik Christensen are the performers for the Aug. 29 Friar Fest at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road. Book lovers wait all year. As the school year begins and calendars are filled in, it's time to mark the dates for the 20th annual Book Sale at Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church. This year the sale will take place on Sept. 17 and 18, 3-7 p.m., and Sept 19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This is the largest used book sale in Howard County. Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church is at 14551 Burntwoods Road. All proceeds from this phenomenal book sale go toward church-sponsored charities.

If fall spruce-up projects are on your mind, come out to the Howard County Fairgrounds this weekend for the annual Peak Building materials auction. Aug. 29 at 9 a.m. is when the auction gavel first comes down.
