See you at the fair. Those are the words of the week as our community prepares for the annual Howard County Fair. The signature event of West Friendship will be in place all week from Aug. 3-10, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., daily.
This is the time of year when old friends catch up, politicians hand out leaflets, firefighters spin games of chance, french fries are doled out by the boosters from Glenelg High School, music is strummed by the likes of John Frank, little ones screech with excitement on the fairway rides and 4-H members proudly showcase the projects which they have worked on all year long.
Topping the highlights of the 68th annual fair is the Aug. 4 Grand Opening Parade at 2 p.m. Among the parading luminaries will be a contingency from West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department participating in the 30th annual Station 3 parade.
Make sure to stop by the Dunking Booth, the Bingo Hall, the Snowball Stand and the popular Money Wheel all staffed by volunteers from Station 3.
West Friendship's Howard County Antique Farm Machinery Club president John Frank will once again perform with his band Lone Mountain on Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. Hometown music never sounded so good.
For Kim Feaga, whose kids Mitchell and Ellie are Howard County Dairy Club 4-H members with lots of entries to prepare for the fair, this time of year is chaotic.
"My dining room table is completely covered with sewing projects, posters, outfits to dress up the animals for the New Zoo Revue parade, crafts, photography and items to decorate the club float," said Kim. "It's fair time for sure."
On top of all the creative clutter that comes with fair preparations, Kim and her family are awaiting the birth of a new calf and have "amped" up the usual farm tasks like spraying the cows with water and supplying a steady amount of fresh cold drinking water for the animals during the recent heat wave.
Anna Banana Smoothies is set as the guest vendor on Aug. 3, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the weekly Glenwood Farmers Market. Nutritious smoothies made from real fruit.
If the school kids haven't completed their summer reading yet, Erin Matthews at Books With A Past wants to help out. Erin is offering a discount on any summer school reading list items. Stop by the bookstore and see if your book is on the shelf. If not, Matthews will order it for you. The shop is at 2465 Route 97 in Glenwood and is open daily.
Saturday night at the movies. What could be better? The community is invited out to the Shrine of St. Anthony on August 3 at 8:30p.m., for a family movie night. The beautiful grounds of the shrine is the outdoor setting for a screening of "A Man for all Seasons".
The 1966 film stars Paul Scofield in the role of Sir Thomas More and Robert Shaw as Henry VIII. Moviegoers are invited to come to the Red Barn, at 12290 Folly Quarter Road, for a "free offering" admission. Bring chairs, blankets, lawn quilts and bug spray if you have a mind to. Popcorn and movie snacks will be available for purchase.
