Relay for life, western Howard edition, brings in $40,000 on way to $84,000 goal [West Friendship]

Area walkers are ready to move all night during the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of western Howard County starting at 6:30 p.m. June 7 at the western regional park on Carrs Mill Road in Woodbine.

Pledges already total nearly $40,000 and participants are ready with luminaries to honor the memories of lost loved ones. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for staying the course in honor of cancer survivors. Volunteers have worked all year to top last year's $84,000 in contributions to the American Cancer Society generated by the relay. Volunteer Suzy Hill has been planning her annual survivor's dinner and bake sales, plant sales. Good luck to all the walkers on June 7. This is the best week of all at West Friendship Elementary. The last few school days are packed with activities, celebrations, culminating events and the giddy buzz that comes with the anticipation of summer vacation. Ice cream socials, class picnics, the kindergarten musical, the annual simulated Congressional hearing, early dismissal days finally culminate in the last day on June14.

Coincidentally, that day is Flag Day. Well done elementary kids. Wishes are extended for a safe and carefree summer break.


Speaking of summer break. Spaces are still open for a photography camp at Glenelg Country School. Part of the Summer in the Country offerings at the Glenelg Country campus, this class is headed by Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Reginald A. Pearman and his specialty staff. The school also has camps with a range as wide as sports and mathematics to dance, cooking and robotics. Winners of the Ellicott City Restoration Foundations's Historic District photo contest will be announced during a reception at the Howard County Welcome Center June 7 at 7 p.m. In addition, County Executive Ken Ulman will be the recipient of the Person of the Year Award for his extraordinary dedication to the Ellicott City Historic District.

An exhibit of the winning entries and a reception sponsored by Tersiguel's French Country Restaurant, the Rumor Mill Fusion Bar and the Mat About You Gallery are free and open to the public. The Welcome Center is at 8267 Main Street in the historic district of Ellicott City.

Congratulations to Howard County's volunteer based organization Neighbor Ride which was recently honored as a 2013 Top Rated Non Profit. Neighbor Ride is dedicated to enhancing the health and quality of life for Howard County's older residents by providing affordable transportation for health care appointments, cultural and social activities, religious services, shopping and other personal needs.

Don't forget. The Howard County Farmers' Market at Glenwood sets up shop each Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Featured farmers include R.J.Caulder of Breezy Willow Farm in West Friendship, with her berries, vegetables, honey, herbs, soaps and jam.

Thai Spices of Ellicott City brings spicy sauces, Thai custards, curry puffs and curry sauces. Other vendors include Great Harvest Bread with its signature hearty breads, scones, granola and sandwiches. The market is on the parking lot of the Glenwood library.
