Mount View girls given Girl Scout Silver Award [West Friendship]

Congratulations are in order for Mount View Middle School seventh-graders and Girl Scouts Juliettes Hanna Al-Kowsi and her partner Ava Pirie of Troop 794 who were awarded the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award in early May.

The Silver Award is the second highest award in Girl Scouts and can be earned by scouts in the sixth through eighth grades. The girls were honored during a ceremony at Camp Ilchester.

Hanna and Ava spent more than 70 hours working with the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company to create educational materials that were used during their Salute to Strong and Independent Women Weekend in last summer. The materials were appropriate to coincide with the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company's productions of "Cleopatra" and "The Taming of the Shrew."

The Scouts researched independent women throughout history and created an activity book featuring strong women from Catherine the Great to Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai. Their exhibit also included a carnival photo stand featuring Susan B. Anthony, Cleopatra, Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare.

The educational materials are currently utilized at West Friendship Elementary and at the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company.

Hanna and Ava mailed copies of their book to notable living women who were featured in the volume. The two Scouts were thrilled to receive replies from First Lady Michelle Obama and famed anthropologist Jane Goodall.

The girls are grateful for the support of their families, their Troop 794 mentors and their Chesapeake Shakespeare Company adviser, Jean Thompson.
