Historical Society invites you to explore Howard's past [West Friendship]

Love history? Looking for activities for the kids this summer? Then come to the Howard County Miller library on May 30, 1-5 p.m., for the sign up and kick off of this summer's "Passport to the Past 2015" summer program sponsored by the Howard County Historical Society.

The history-laced program invites kids ages preschool through 8th grade, to discover Howard County's past. This easy and family friendly program involves picking up a passport and visiting the varied historic sites in the county. More than 24 sites are suggested, from mill ruins, to county farms, to old school houses, for a program which is fun and informative. All the rules and regulations for the program will be explained at the Miller library kickoff on May 30.

And grownups who love history, especially local history, can participate as a docent at the West Friendship Farm Heritage Museum this summer when tours will be conducted. Interested? Call Virginia Frank at 410-531-2569

Just a reminder. The St. Andrew's monthly feast is set for May 28, 6-8 p.m., at 2892 Route 97 in Glenwood. "It's Italian with all the trimmings," said Lynne Quinn who organizes the event. The meal is $9 per person or $30 for the entire family. Dine in or carry out.

Proceeds from the May dinner benefit the St. Andrew's Vacation Bible School, which holds "Hearing God's Call" as its theme this year. Vacation Bible School is designed for kindergartners through fifth graders, and scheduled for July 20-24, 9 a.m. to noon. Love books? Mark the calendar for a flea market and mini book sale at Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church, 14551 Burntwoods Road, on May 30, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Lots of flea market finds and books galore according to organizer Carole Kramer.

The Maryland Western Horse Association hosts a show at the Howard County Fairgrounds on May 31, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Good sportsmanship and horsemanship along with learning, friendship, family participation and fun are the coda of this group. Bring the family out to observe western and English horse classes and competitions.

The Celestial Searchers astronomy club will meet on June 1, 7 p.m., in the art room at Bushy Park Elementary. New members are always welcome. Discussions will include plans for the annual "Star-B-Q" family party in the summer as well as space camp at the Robinson Nature Center.

St. James United Methodist will hold Vacation Bible School from July 6-10, 9 a.m. to noon. Children, preschool through fifth grade are invited to participate. Crafts, stories, recreation, music and snacks make up the daily routine with an overall theme of the Amazing Grace Adventures of "Gangway to Galilee".
