If you love sewing projects and are looking for a local handicraft group, then consider joining the Prayer Shawl Ministry, which meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Shrine of St. Anthony, 12290 Folly Quarter Road.
A prayer shawl embraces and comforts the wearer with the love and prayers of the maker and the faith community. Recipients of the shawls may be people who are undergoing medical procedures, who are grieving or who need to feel the love and support of the community during a difficult time in their life.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry also makes shawls for family members of fallen soldiers. The next session is set for Feb. 10 at 12:45 p.m., just after the noon Mass.
Members bring lunch and knit or crochet until 2:30 p.m. New members are always welcome. Questions about this lovely group? Call 410-531-2800.
The community is invited to an evening with William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland on Feb. 11, at 7 p.m., in the Mulitz Theater on the campus of the Glenelg Country School.
As part of Glenelg Country School's 60th anniversary celebrations, the school is hosting Kirwan in a presentation on "Hot Topics in Higher Education." The discussion will focus on subjects such as the influence of technology, campus climates, and accessibility to higher education. Glenelg Country School is at 12793 Folly Quarter Road. Questions? Call Amanda Martorana at 410-531-7336.
Come out to the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship this weekend when the American Kennel Club hosts two days of all-breed dog shows on Feb. 7 and 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., for a canine extravaganza with the Maryland Kennel Club.
Lucky us who breezed by with just a lovely dusting of snow on Jan. 27. Many thanks to the volunteers of West Friendship Volunteer Fire Department who stood ready for blizzard conditions. Before you know it, we will be spotting crocus in the yard.
