Sankofa Dance Theater is part of the Young Audiences Residency Program, which is the nation's oldest and largest arts program in nonprofit education.

A kickoff assembly for one-third of the student body was followed by workshops with each dance level. Students learned history, terms, drumming music and dance steps of traditional West African culture such as KuKu-a fishing harvest dance done by the women of the village.

The week culminates with an assembly featuring the dance students of MRHS along with members of Sankofa performing traditional dances of celebration, harvest and rites of passage. On Oct. 16, three of the four dance levels performed the dances they learned for 250 of their peers and faculty at the school.
