Hippie invasion!
Quaker Peace Walk Surprises Ellicott City
"Don't go near Main Street! A group of hippies have invaded Ellicott City!! There's a nude-in taking place on the lawn of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church!' So the rumors ran through Ellicott City last Friday evening. Phones rang and people talked.
"The truth of the matter was that 35 Quakers were on a march from Washington, D.C., to Fort McHenry in Baltimore and thence to Edgewood Arsenal and Fort Detrick. They spent the night in Ellicott City at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church.
"They carried with them an evergreen tree that they wanted to plant on the grounds of Edgewood Arsenal. The project was sponsored by a coalition of peace groups including not only Quaker Action Group, but also Catholic Peace Fellowship, Jewish Peace Fellowship, War Resisters League, Women's International League For Peace and Freedom."
From a Times article about Troy Hill mansion in Elkridge
"Some historians say that the mansion was originally constructed as early as 1694, and county legend holds that it was once the secret meeting place of Revolutionary War soldiers. The SRC (State Roads Commission) offered the land to the Maryland Historical Trust in 1969 when the society expressed interest in the mansion as a possible restoration project. The Historical Trust then discontinued its active interest in the mansion, but acted as agents for the sale of the mansion."
