Special Scout mission
"Two Clarksville Scouts Picked For World's Fair Troop; Andrew N. Adams, Jr., and Frederick Randall Selected By Area Council
"Two Howard County Boy Scouts were selected with thirty others from the Baltimore Area Council to spend one week this summer in the model Boy Scout camp at the New York World's Fair. The two boys, Andrew N. Adams, Jr. Life Scout and Frederick Randall, Star Scout, both of troop 362 of Clarksville, were named by the selection board of the Baltimore Area Council last week.
"Young Adams acquired the rank of Life Scout recently and Randall expects to reach this rank before leaving for New York. The boys will join other scouts from Maryland on June 24 in Baltimore where they will entrain for New York. All will be in uniform and wear a special World's Fair neckerchief. During their stay in New York they will be on duty five hours a day doing Scout work for the Fair. The balance of the day will be taken up with camp duties and pleasure.
"Troop No. 362, of which they are members, is composed of Howard and Montgomery county boys and Andrew N. Adams, Sr. is Scoutmaster. Mr. Adams said both boys have worked hard during the past year to reach their present ranking and both hold sashes full of merit badges."
The World's Fair ran for two seasons, in 1939 and 1940. The same site was used also for the 1964-1965 World's Fair at Flushing Meadow, Corona Park, New York. Sixty nations participated, providing an array of displays.
Interestingly, in 1939 Britain sent over a copy of the Magna Carta to be viewed by fair visitors, but because its entrance in the war against Germany, in 1940 the document became a temporary refugee as the Brits decided to leave that document in the safety of America until war's end. It was kept at Fort Knox until it returned home in 1947.
