"News Of Girl Scouts Of Ellicott City

"Last week was Girl Scout Week. The local troop is grateful for the case which was fixed at the high school. It contained several Girl Scout badges, emblems and other articles. Bulletin boards at the high school and elementary school displayed pictures of Girls Scouts and their activities."

"The ladies of St. Paul's Catholic Church will hold their annual card party on April 17 at the Elementary school gymnasium, College avenue.

"Miss Katherine Laumann and Miss Kay Wosch, of Main street, will spend today and tomorrow, (Thursday and Friday) at Waterloo at the home of Miss Laumann's sister.

"Miss Ruth Kelly, Mrs. Edward Snowden and Mr. George B. Kelly motored to Bluefield, W.Va., last week to attend the funeral of their uncle."

"Elibank, Historic Poe Home, Ruined By Sunday Blaze

"A swiftly spreading fire broke out at Elibank, historic home of Edwin W. Poe on Lawyer's Hill, Elkridge, last Sunday morning and within about two hours the 51-year-old house had been burned to the ground. Mr. Poe estimated the loss at approximately $50,000.

"The blaze was discovered, he said, at about 8:45 a.m. and the Halethorpe fire department was summoned by telephone. Upon the arrival of the latter, companies from Ellicott City, Catonsville, Odenton, Jessup and Savage were called. However, the fire, which evidently was started by sparks from a fireplace which ignited the shingle roof, was beyond control.

"Fireman, Mr. and Mrs. Poe, their daughter, Miss Augusta M. Poe, and her fiancé, Sanford Agnew, who were in the house when the flames were detected, carried furniture, clothing and books from the first two floors. the famous Cathedral Garden on the grounds of the estate also was saved."

"Red Cross Drive Nets $1,094, Topping Quota

"A total of $1,094.65 was collected in Howard County during the recent Red Cross drive, it was announced this week by Daniel M. Murray, chairman of the campaign here. Mr. Murray expressed satisfaction that the sum exceeded the quota, of $1,000 which had been set for the county.

"Returns from each district were, first, $326.83; second, $374.68; third, $77.75; fourth, $129.35, fifth, $91.66, and sixth, $94.38.

"Included in the sum for the first district was a contribution of $10 raised among colored people of that area by Nannie Taylor, of Elkridge, who volunteered her services."

"Crowd of 300 At Dedication Of Fire Engine House Here

"Despite threatening rain, approximately 300 persons turned out last night (Wednesday) to witness the dedication of Ellicott City's new fire engine house. The crowd, which filled the engine room of the building to capacity, enjoyed a fine meal served by the Ladies of the department, then heard a brief speaking program."

Explosion injury

"Mr. Joseph Procter, of Main street was severely cut about the face during the past week by the explosion of a percussion cap.

"Dr. J. Hartley Johnson has had his drug store remodeled which is now one of the prettiest in the State.

"Jacob Kirn and Sons put a new bridge across the Tiber on the Columbia pike this week for the Ellicott City Commissioners."
