Narrow escape
"Family Of Nine Forced To Flee Blazing House; Ellicott City Home Lost With Most of Contents; Aid Given By Local Groups
"Nine persons barely escaped with their lives when fire destroyed their home on Main street at the West end of Ellicott City, early last Saturday morning. The house was occupied by the Homer Smith and his family, who were unable to save even their clothing, so rapidly were they forced to leave the blazing building.
"The Ellicott City fire company was summoned at about 5:30 a.m., but the entire house was ablaze by that time. The firemen, fighting freezing house lines in the near zero temperature, were barely able to keep the flames from spreading to Burgess' garage. Only the side walls of the house were left standing when the blaze finally was stopped."
