"Charles Miller Speaks To Welcome Wagon Club:
"The members of the Howard County Welcome Wagon Club will have their January meeting on Thursday the 21st, at the Turf Valley Country club, and it has been anticipated as the outstanding meeting of the club year.
"Charles Miller, chairman of the Howard County Commissioners, will be present to address members and guests of the Welcome Wagon club, and his subject will be 'problems that are facing Howard County.'
"After lunch, those who wish, may use the facilities of the Turf Valley Country Club for bridge or canasta games."
While playing cards was a welcome diversion, especially before the advent of electronic games, bridge remains popular today, while you don't hear much about canasta. But canasta, a game which emigrated from Uruguay, came to America in 1948 and became extremely popular.

Horses and divorces
"Mr. Frank Iglehart, of Dorseyville, near Glenwood, in the Fourth district, while returning to his home on horseback on Saturday evening, was caught under his horse, which fell, and one of his legs severely injured.
"Mr. Thomas S. Cross of the Third district, on Thursday applied for an absolute divorce from his wife, Mary Olivia, charging in his application that she had eloped with Harry C. Hobbs.
"Mr. Chas. Bathgate, of Ilchester, has lately built a fine ice house on the farm of Mr. Levering who owns property in the same neighborhood. The excavation is seventeen feet square at the top, 12 l/2 at the bottom, 16 l/2 feet deep. The house is built of logs, the small ends being placed down and the butts up.
"Miss Mamie Hewitt was Tuesday appointed by the school board assistant teacher in Public School No. 4. third district. Miss Millie Merceron is the principal. This school has at present 64 pupils on the roll and an average attendance of 50."
Latest Howard County
It would be another 12 years until education would be compulsory in Maryland, in 1902. Many states in the midwest had compulsory education beginning in the 1870s. Massachusetts was the first to make it compulsory, in 1852.
