"Cub Scouts No. 974 Hold Essay Contest: Cub Scout Pack No. 974 recently held an essay contest on 'What The Cub Scouts Mean To Me.' The contest was judged by The Reverend Gerald L. Bell of Mt. Hebron Presbyterian Church.

"The winner of the contest, David Hafele, said of the Scouts 'It makes a man out of you,' while Brent Dunderlin, who took second place feels that 'Scouting helps to bridge the generation gap.'

"New Post Office To Be Hastened Congressman Told: Prospects that Ellicott City's new post office finally will be started were considerably brightened this week when Congressman Lansdale G. Sasscer announced that the Government had promised to complete the project as soon as possible.

"Building of the post office has been under consideration for more than a year. The government last January completed the purchase of property on Main street, now occupied by a service station and two vacant homes. Bids were received, but all were rejected last March.

"Several weeks will elapse before any bids can be accepted, so construction cannot be expected to start for several months after bids have been asked."

"Jewish Appeal gives $250,000 to Aid Christians: Sum to Help refugees Is Divided Equally Between Catholics, Protestants

"From funds raised in 1939 to meet the needs of its Jewish relief and reconstruction agencies, the United Jewish Appeal for Refugees and Overseas Needs has announced allocation of $250,000 for assistance to Christian refugees, half to be made available to Pope Pius XII for aid to Catholics and other half to be contributed to Protestant agencies through Dr. George A. Buttrick, president of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America.

"Pointing out that the problem of the refugees is by no means a Jewish one but includes members of all faiths, Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and Rabbi Jonah B. Wise, national chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, declared that those responsible for allocation of funds for Jewish agencies felt a portion should be reserved for distribution through Christian agencies to help victims of persecution without regard to race or religion."

"W.C. Seigmund, of the Federal Bureau of Animal Industry, in charge of the government's part of the campaign against the foot-and-mouth disease in Maryland, has issued an order slightly modifying the quarantine regulations relating to the movement of cattle and other ruminants in the State."
