Exciting showdown on the ice for Reservoir High [Highland/Fulton]

The stands at the Columbia Skating Rink were filled with fans for the annual ice hockey showdown between the opposing teams. On one bench sat the defending champions: the Reservoir High School Hockey Team. On the other bench sat their yearly opponents who were looking for an upset: the Community Team made up of alumni, Reservoir High School staff and staff family members.

It was their fifth meeting and hopes were high. The defending champs struck first with two quick scores. Cameron Hyder, with assists by Chris Moon and Nik Meuschke, scored the first goal. Chris Moon then scored a goal with an assist by Chris Roarty.

But their Community opponents weren't about to fold. Matty Valvano, assisted by Nick Onorato and Matt Shagogue, got their team on the board with a puck between the pipes. The score was 2-1 in favor of the champs. Willie Watts scored again to make it 3-1.

The first period ended with a score of 3-2 when RHS alumnus Brandon Dean scored a goal, assisted by alumna Megan Jackson. The second period started with a goal in the first minute by Cameron, assisted by Taylor McEldowney. Ty Teodori put the student team ahead even further with another (unassisted) goal. As the second period was coming to a close, Megan scored another (unassisted) goal for the Community team, ending the period with a score of 5-3.

The third period saw Megan scoring another goal for the Community team, this time with an assist by Matty bringing the score to 5-4. Matt Shagogue added another goal, tying the game. The student team wasn't finished just yet: Naveed Nekoo scored a goal with an assist by Ben Williams. With just under a minute of play, Nick, assisted by David Walley, tied the game up at 6-6. What an exciting game!

Now the outcome of the game rested squarely on the shoulders (and pads) of the respective goalies. The Community team shot first. RHS goalie Kris Westland was impressive in the net, stopping 4 of the 6 shoots. Next up, the reigning champs facing Community goalie John Perfetto. He gave it a valiant effort, stopping 3 of the 6 shots.

The student team won the game with the final score 9-7. What an awesome performance by both the student team and the community team. Congratulations to the Reservoir Hockey team and to the Community Team for a game well played. The Community Team members were David Walley, Bryan Cole, Nick Onorato, Josh Sullivan, alumnus Travis Woodard, Matt Shagogue, Brian Frisvold (Friz's husband), alumnus PJ Westland, Andy Roberts (Lauren Roberts' husband), alumnus Rohan Kuruvilla, alumna Megan Jackson, alumnus Brandon Dean, alumnus Louis Consoli, David Burke, John Perfetto and Matty Valvano.

Only 20 shopping days until Christmas. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
