It's Veteran's Day as I write these words. This day was originally called Armistice Day and commemorates the official ending of the "Great War," World War I, at the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

Later, in 1926, Congress passed a resolution requesting President Calvin Coolidge to recognize Nov. 11 with "appropriate ceremonies." In 1938, a Congressional Act was passed declaring Nov. 11 of each year to be a legal holiday: "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."

In May of 1954, President Eisenhower signed into the bill into law. Congress amended the bill one last time, renaming the day to the name it's been known ever since: Veteran's Day. There are many local veterans to whom we owe a debt of gratitude for their willingness to stand for us as our first line of defense.

Reservoir High School has a few veterans — Andre Beaudoin, Bill Bellamy, David Burke, Ken Klock, Kevin Miller, Thomas Roberts, Phil Rogers, and Russ Wentworth. Some local veterans are Mike Beltz, sons Jake Beltz, residing in Saudi Arabia, and Jon Beltz, of Florida, Bill Leishear, son Mike Leishear, of Leonardtown, and Paul Thompson, of Middletown.

Thank you for your service to this great country.
