On Jan. 10, the Reservoir High School Physics Olympic team played host to the second annual Howard County Physics Olympics. Nearly 30 teams from across the county attended the games.
RHS Team C, made up of Sachin Kuruvilla, Justin Sutcliff, Javier Zambrana, Desmond Capers, Jacob Rosenbaum and Zach Blough, came in third place overall.
The team also won the event called Crossing Frey's Paper Bridge. This challenge consisted of constructing a bridge using only five sheets of copier paper and 10 centimeters (4 inches) of duct tape. Their bridge held 1.52 kg (3.34 lbs.) of marbles.
Reservoir "A" Team, consisting of Steven Schinner, Jordan Arian-Nejad, Jack Barry, Anna Janush, Natalie Raymond and Darci Fehr, won the "Nightwalking the Plank" event. In this challenge, the team arranged two planks and two cinder block in such a way as to maximize the product of the walker's weight and the distance they walked from the nearest support.
Congratulations to both teams and also to their sponsors Kevin Miller, Paul Lee and Minh Pho for the time that they dedicate to the teams.
The Reservoir High School Wrestling Teams, both varsity and junior varsity, dominated their Centennial High School opponents during the recent Senior Night matches. The JV started off with a 66-6 victory; the varsity finished the night with a 58-12 win.
The five seniors on the team won their matches — Trent Kilcarr winning an 11-4 decision and Troy Kilcarr, Jeremiah Branch, Matt Gonzales and Stephen Sims all scoring pins. Teammates Shawn Hamilton, Tyler Ecker and Dalton Kleinhen also pinned their opponents.
Even though we are deep in throes of winter, it's never too early to be thinking about gardening. If you are like us and live in the shade beneath a pretty dense canopy of trees, maybe it's time to think about how to plant a colorful garden in that shaded area.
Master Gardener Pat Greenwald will pesent "Color in the Shade" at the Savage Library on Wednesday Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. You will learn how to design a colorful shade garden, best practices for shade gardening and plant suggestions for bringing color to that shaded area.
