Middle school students excel in spelling and manners [Highland/Fulton]

The Lime Kiln Middle School Spelling Bee will be held on Jan. 26, at 8:30 a.m with the winner representing the school at the Howard County Public School System Spelling Bee in March. The following students qualified: Amaya Aranda, Sofia Badagliacca, Dylan Bradford, Kendall By, Aiai Calmer, Chessie Dowdy, Allen Dzubak, Alex Fernandes, Ishan Goswami, Carolyn Jacob, Calvin Keeley, Michelle Lee, Anna Liu, Ryan Mathew, Ava McGee, Oriel Ockerman, Vera Ortiz Martinez, Samir Patel, Lavanya Singh, Sean Southard, Joey Squirlock, Arrion Wade, Elena Walter, Zach Zinderman, Irene Allbritton-King, Mitra Aminian Razavi, Alex Cui, Larissa Dragulescu, Caris Eaton, Lexi Fishman, Jack Hadeed, Lauren Hamlette, Jason Kang, Jennifer Kim, Suzie Kirk, Sheila Li, Nate Mearns-Escobar, Teagan Rausch, Nick Ryu, Amber Sears, Aelia Thakkar, Alisha Uddin, Karen Yhim, Valerie Yu, Rishi Khosla, Anushka Segar, Garrett Skolkin and Livia Zhao. The LKMS students who demonstrate their ability to “ROAR” by being responsible, respectful, and academically focused, are known as Lime Lighters. The Lime Lighters for the week for the week ending Jan. 12 were: Riyana Patel, Mason Huynh, Daniel Carr, Zoe Ryee, Allie Young, Kate Herberholz, Keiran Green, Julia Dustin and Lorenzo Gamble.

The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County in partnership with the HCPSS recognized the following Fulton Elementary School students in the 2016-2017 school year for their outstanding academic success in the MSA Science Assessment (fifth- grade students), language arts and mathematics. These students: Received a grade of “A” or “B” for math and language arts in each of the four marking periods; and, scored “Advanced” on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) for science (fifth grade). They were recognized at a Celebration of Academic Achievement on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at an assembly at Hammond High School. They are: Christian Abernathy, Ayden Alexander, Nina Amani-Dove, Kevin Applewhite, Thomas Aseged, Ava Bailey, Jaylen Bennett, Sarah Choe, Dylan Clarke, Jewel Crocker, Milkey Ezra, Alicia Feher, Lulna Ghirmai, Haley Hunt, Brooke Jackson, Habibatu Koroma, Alexander Lee, Kai Lewis, Mathias Makonnen, Kevin Mogire, Gabriella Morais, Sirak Nephtalem, Olivia Onyenorah, Lauren Tompkins, Lena Washington and Matthew Williams.
