Have an unused bike? Leo Club has a use for it [Glenwood/Glenelg/Dayton]

Each May, the Leo Club of Glenwood Middle School sponsors a bike drive to benefit Bikes for the World, an organization that repairs and ships bicycles to people around the world.

In many countries bicycles are the primary means of transportation, and they can change people's lives, making it possible for them to go to school or work. Over the holidays many children in our neighborhood may be getting new bikes, leaving their older bikes looking for a new home.

The Leo Club will hold a mini bike drive as part of its monthly meeting on Thursday, Jan. 8. If you have bicycles to donate, they can be dropped off that day on the grassy area near the loading dock at Glenwood Middle School. The Leo Club students will store the bikes until the main bike drive on Saturday, May 16. If you have questions, contact David Brown, Glenwood's principal, at david_brown@hcpss.org.

Lisa Boss, the music teacher at Bushy Park Elementary School, wants to congratulate Audrey Bower, Sarah Cherry, Xavier Cook, Peyton Kern, Albert Yin and Sydney Yoon, who performed in the Howard County Children's Chorus concert on Sunday, Dec. 7 at Mt. Hebron High School. The children performed a selection of winter songs from around the world to a very appreciative audience. Boss is justifiably proud of these talented singers who were selected for the chorus.

There are some great events being offered at the Glenwood Library this month for young people. I especially like the Noon Year's Eve Penguin Ball. Children aged 3 to 7 are encouraged to dress up in black and white to ring in the New Year penguin style with stories, music and a craft. There will be a special countdown followed by an apple juice toast. This 45-minute session will be held Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 11:30 a.m. Registration is required.

Children aged 5 and up can participate in Book Bingo on Monday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at the Glenwood Library. They will play bingo games featuring characters from books, and the prizes will be books.
