The Glenwood Lions Club, through its partnership with the Glenwood Middle School Leo Club, has been collecting bicycles for Bikes for the World since 2008. The used bicycles are shipped to countries throughout the world where they are used as a primary means of transportation. Repair and maintenance is performed in each country, allowing people to learn important skills in addition to the transportation opportunities. This year the Lions added a pilot program to collect bicycles at the Alpha Ridge Landfill on the first Saturday of each month. County Executive Allan Kittleman proposed that the Lions run this program to help keep bicycles out of the landfill. From April through October, the Lions collected 205 bicycles and nine scooters, along with helmets and parts, all of which will be donated to Bikes for the World. Thanks to Lions Joe Long, Larry Orwig, Pete Adams, Josh Dill and Harrison Morson for their hard work of collecting and transporting the donations to the old Bushy Park Elementary School building. The bicycles are stored there until Bikes for the World collects them. The Lions also want to thank Kittleman, Alan Wilcom, the chief of the Recycling Division in Environmental Services, and Alan Zink, who coordinated the storage space at Bushy Park. Without their approval and support from their staffs, this program would not have been possible. The Glenelg High School Marching Unit is taking orders for the November fruit sale.
