Glenwood Middle School recently held its 23rd annual Midnight Madness event. This year's theme was "Hoops for the Troops."
Over $10,000 was raised to support scholarship programs at Glenelg High School, the Mid-Atlantic Make-A-Wish Foundation in honor of former Glenwood student Sam Forman, and the main charity, which was Fisher House of Bethesda.
Fisher House supports the families of wounded troops as they recover in local military hospitals, hence this year's event name. David Brown, principal at Glenwood, is proud of this community event that brings families together and helps the school raise funds to support worthy charities.
An event this size requires much help from many parent volunteers, plus the hard working staff at Glenwood, especially the Related Arts staff and the Physical Education teachers Scott Dingman and Emily DeLisle, who organized the event.
During the evening the Leo Club collected paper products to donate to the Glenelg United Methodist Church Food Bank.
Glenwood Middle students Cole Iannarino and Andrew Meissner were recognized as two of the three Howard County winners of the Maryland Masters Award during a ceremony in April at Glenwood.
The Maryland Masters Award program recognizes public school students who have displayed extraordinary artistic skills and a vision for Maryland's future. During the 2013-2014 school year works of art were submitted by each county school system at three grade levels, elementary, middle and high school. When his art was submitted, Meissner was still a student at Lisbon Elementary School, so Glenwood and Lisbon were both recognized.
Comptroller Peter Franchot presented the students with a certificate of recognition and a keepsake medallion. County Executive Allan Kittleman, State Sen. Gail Bates and Register of Wills Byron MacFarlane attended the ceremony. The art work will be on display in the Comptroller's Office for the next two months. Congratulations to Iannarino and Meissner.
Glenelg High School student Cole Lahmann's written work titled "One Person's Chain," has won a second place Award of Excellence in the National Parent Teacher Association's Reflections arts contest.
Lahmann's work was judged against entries in the literature category from throughout the United States, and was one of three winners from Howard County and six winners total from the state of Maryland. Congratulations to Lahmann for this outstanding achievement.
Glenelg student Tim Bowman and Jake Black from River Hill High School teamed up and qualified to represent Howard County in a statewide competition in auto mechanics sponsored by AAA and Ford Motor Company in April. Both young men are students at the Applications and Research Laboratory, which is the county's career and technology high school.
Ten schools from across the state sent teams consisting of two students and a teacher advisor to the competition. The students were chosen based on their scores on a written exam. Identical bugged cars were provided to each of the teams and the members competed against the clock to repair the problems in their car. Winners were determined based on cost, time and the repairs made. The team of Bowman and Black finished fifth overall. These talented young men are headed towards important careers.
