Leo Club back on the bicycle-gathering beat [Glenwood/Glenelg/Dayton]

The Glenwood Middle School Leo Club's annual bike drive will be Saturday, May 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the middle school parking lot. Bicycles in any condition will be collected and donated to Bikes for the World.

This nonprofit organization has collected over 100,000 bikes in the past 10 years, and the Glenwood Leo Club has contributed about 650 bikes during the six years that they have been collecting them. The bicycles are shipped to other countries, where they are used for daily transportation. They are usually repaired in the country they are shipped to, and this provides employment and teaches important skills to the local people.

In addition, the Leo Club will collect sewing machines and durable medical equipment, such as crutches and canes. These items will be sent around the world to help where they are needed. Tax-deductable cash donations to help offset the shipping expenses are always welcome.

Glenwood Lions Club members Harrison Morson and Larry Orwig, both supporters of the Glenwood Leo Club, encourage you to check around your house for used bikes, sewing machines and medical equipment to donate.

Laura Bower, coach of the Bushy Park Elementary School Battle of the Books team called the Literature Detectives, is very proud of her group of fifth graders. Audrey Bower, Jaiya Dua, Lily Oakes, Christine Rioux and Emily Robinson read 16 books over four months.

They worked hard, practicing questions and participating in mock battles, and ended by placing third overall in the competition held at Howard High School. Bushy Park fielded four teams, the Book Busters, Royal Readers, Literature Detectives and Literature Labradoodles in the competition sponsored by the Howard County Library System. Keep up the good reading habits, Literature Detectives.

Mark your calendars. The Glenelg High School Spring Concert will be Thursday, May 7, and Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m., in the Glenelg Auditorium. The Glenelg Choir will perform with the full orchestra, and the Jazz Ensemble will perform in costume. This is the concert that is too big for one night, and you shouldn't miss it. Tickets will be available soon from the office, or a member of one of the performing groups.
