Kathleen Rimlinger, the band and strings director at Bushy Park Elementary School, is excited to announce that Amy Hwang, a fifth grader at Bushy Park, has been chosen to participate in the Howard County Elementary Gifted and Talented Band.

These talented young musicians are selected for the band after a rigorous audition process. They practice together for several weeks, then perform a concert in March. Amy, who has been selected for the band two years in a row, placed first out of all the flute players in all the elementary schools in Howard County. Rimlinger is very proud. Congratulations to Amy.

We are now past the midpoint of winter. The first of February is halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, and while the days are getting longer, snow is falling regularly. My bird feeder is a very popular place for the local birds to gather. There are at least 10 different species of birds which regularly visit the feeder, and my family gets a lot of pleasure from watching them.

If you enjoy watching birds, and want to learn more about them, the Howard County Bird Club's next meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Robinson Nature Center on Cedar Lane. The Nature Center doors will be unlocked at 7:15 p.m. A hospitality session at 7:30 p.m. kicks off the meeting, and the program starts at 8 p.m. There is no entrance fee for bird club programs.

The program for February is "Birds of a Feather: seasonal changes on both sides of the Atlantic" by Colin Rees. This talk will be based on a book he co-wrote with a birder from the United Kingdom.

Rees, a long time birder, is a member of the Maryland Ornithological Society and chairs their Long Range Planning Committee. For more information about this meeting, or to get information about the Howard County Bird Club, call club president Robin Todd at 410-491-5333.
