Cakes go to auction, pies go to face, at Scout event [Glenwood/Glenelg/Dayton]

Rick Tinker contacted me with information about Boy Scout Troop 793, which meets at Glenelg United Methodist Church. On Wednesday, Dec. 17, the troop held its annual Cake Auction to benefit the Glenelg United Methodist Church Food Pantry.

The Scouts created beautiful cakes and other goodies, which were then bid on by the Scouts and their parents. A quadruple layer cake with Bavarian cream in between each layer, which was elaborately decorated in a Christmas wreath design, won the highest bid for the night at $100.

Then Scoutmaster Bob Linkous of Dayton offered a special item for bidding. He was willing to auction a pie that could be thrown in his face. With each $10 bid over the $50 starting point, the winning bidder was allowed to stand a foot closer to Linkous. The successful bid of $110 meant that the pie thrower was standing right in front of Linkous, and no throwing was necessary.

After his face was covered with cream, Linkous again surprised the audience by producing a second pie to be thrown in his face. The second pie went for $100, and Linkous was "pie-d" again. The Scouts and their parents had a great time, and the auction raised a record amount for the food pantry of $1,410. These Scouts are learning to be good neighbors while having fun, and Scoutmaster Linkous is a really good sport.
