This Thanksgiving, here's a way to burn off calories before you head to the holiday table — the Dancel Family Center YMCA is sponsoring its annual Turkey Trot Charity 5K on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 28, at 8:30 a.m.
The money raised will help support the Y's GIve Every Child a Chance campaign for kids living in poverty in Central Maryland communities.
The race starts on Long Gate Parkway, winds through Meadowbrook Lane, and finishes at the Long Gate shopping center. Awards will be given to overall top male and female and in each age group. Start your holiday shopping early at Howard County Arts Council's annual Open House and Holiday Sale on Friday, Dec. 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Peruse local artists handcrafted items for sale including jewelry, wearables, accessories, paintings, photography, prints, wooden vessels and furniture, metalwork, and greeting cards. Refreshments will be provided.

County Executive Ken Ulman will hold his first Citizens' Budget Hearing for the 2015 budget cycle on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. in the George Howard Building's Banneker Room. If you have an idea or opinion on the county's budget, this is your opportunity to speak.
Beginning on Wednesday, Dec. 4, residents can sign-up online to speak at the hearing by going to http://www.howardcountymd.gov/budgettestimony.htm. Alternatively, residents can provide on-line budget testimony at the same link. Note that internet testimony is considered public information and is subject to the Maryland Public Information Act.
