Halloween party at Y geared toward families [Ellicott City]

The Dancel Family Center Y in Ellicott City is hosting a Happy Healthy Halloween event on Friday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. This pre-Halloween family friendly activity is open to the community and features games, healthy snacks and costume contests.

The cost is free for YMCA members, $5 for individuals and $10 for families. The Dancel Family Center Y is at 4331 Montgomery Road, across from the Long Gate Shopping Center. For more details, call 410-465-4334.

Celebrate the Howard County Library System's 75 years of excellence in education on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at HCLS Miller Branch.

The schedule of events includes: (10 to 11 a.m.) a "Chapters-of-Our-Lives" time capsule ceremony, (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.) a Lego Challenge, Monarch Butterfly Scavenger Hunt in the Enchanted Garden, Family Retro Board Games, crafts and the HiTech Showroom activities and (11:30 a.m.) musical entertainment by Grammy Award winner Barry Louis Polisar, a pioneer in the world of books and music for children.

Also check out the science displays, demonstrations, and presentations on new technology including 3D printers, augmented reality applications and the newest HiTech instructor Zeus, the Nao Robot. Don't miss students from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who will show how paramagnetic nanoparticles are being used to train a person's own immune system to find and fight cancer.

Calling all crafters! The Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Howard No. 1882, will hold its annual craft bazaar and bake sale Sunday, Nov. 22 from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Church of the Resurrection in Ellicott City.

Choirs from Bethany, Glen Mar, Glenelg, Linden-Linthicum and Mt. Zion United Methodist Churches will join forces at a Benefit Concert on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m., at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane in Ellicott City. The event will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Save the date. Kiwanis Club of Ellicott City hosts its 14th biannual fall All-You-Can-Eat Country Breakfast and Flea Market on Saturday, Nov. 14, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church, 2875 Bethany Lane.

The cost for the breakfast is $8 for adults and free for children under 8 years old.

Proceeds from the breakfast support the club's college scholarships for deserving Howard County students, Center for Talented Youth, Girls on the Run, Boys and Girl Scouts of America, Bright Minds, Deaf Camps, Howard Community College endowment and Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
