Howard County Summer Theatre presents its 41st annual summer musical, Broadway's Tony award winning show "Fiddler on the Roof," on July 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. and July 5 at 2 p.m. at Mt. Hebron High School, 9440 Old Frederick Road in Ellicott City.
"Fiddler" opened on Broadway in September 1964 and became the first musical theater run in history to surpass 3,000 performances, HCST's Chuck Bagley informed me.
Over the years, this popular musical, written about a Jewish dairyman in imperial Russia in 1905, and his efforts to maintain his Jewish traditions in a changing world, has had four Broadway revivals and one very successful film adaptation. HCST's"Fiddler" production this summer is somewhat of a revival as well. The company first staged the musical in 1988.
Under the direction of Tom Sankey, choreographer Amanda Tschirgi and vocal musical director Chris Hettenbach, the show stars local thespian and former long-time Centennial High School theater director Mo Dutterer in the pivotal role of Tevye.
He is joined by a large, multi-generational, all-volunteer cast comprised primarily of Howard County residents including Robin Bloom as Golde, Stephanie Ichniowski as Tzeitel, Christina Mattera and Kelsey Reichard as Hodel, Kassi Mattera as Chava, David Fisher as Motel, Justin Moe as Perchik, and Robbie Babbit and Stephanie Clark as Yente.
Don't miss this summer production that features the classic songs "Matchmaker, Matchmaker," "Sunrise, Sunset," "Miracle of Miracles" and "If I were a Rich Man." Tickets are $17, with a discounted price of $13 for seniors (60+) and children 12 and under. Purchase tickets online at http://www.ticketleap.com, at Music and Arts store in Chatham Station in Ellicott City, or from a cast member. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
As is tradition for all HCST productions, a portion of the proceeds from "Fiddler" will benefit local charities. This year's proceeds will be donated to Prepare for Success, Grassroots and FIRN. To learn more about HCST, go to http://www.howardcountysummertheatre.org.
