Chen receives Girl Scout's highest achievement [Ellicott City]

Madeleine Chen of Girl Scout Troop 102 received her Gold Award recently during a Precious Metal Ceremony at Camp Ilchester. The Centennial High School junior earned the award for her project, The Best Day Ever.

For Chen's Girl Scout project, she worked with Winter Growth Adult Daycare in Columbia to create an art therapy workshop for residents. The result was a mixed-media collage of the residents' "Best Day Ever" that culminated in an art show. Way to go Madeleine!

On Tuesday, June 14, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot will award Tracey Williams, an Ellicott City resident, with the 2016 William Donald Schaefer Helping People Award Howard County. The award is in recognition of Williams' outstanding advocacy work for homeless and impoverished students as a pupil personnel worker in the Howard County Public Schools and for her leadership roles in community organizations, such as serving as the president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc, Iota Lambda Omega Chapter, where she organized expungement fairs and worked with at-risk foster children transitioning to independent living.

Speaking of the AKA Sorority Inc, Iota Lambda Omega Chapter, the organization invites the community to its upcoming fundraiser,Pearlfection: An All-White Affair, on Saturday, June 25, from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Rudy's Mediterranean Grill in Columbia. Proceeds from the event, which features DJ Treystyle, appetizers and a cash bar, will support the sorority's family-strengthening and childhood hunger program with HCPS. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online at pearlfection2016.eventbrite.com.
