Auction at Glen Mar UM benefits Grassroots [Ellicott City]

Silent auction raises $14,000.

Glen Mar United Methodist Church recently held a silent auction that raised over $14,000 for Grassroots, Howard County's 24-hour crisis intervention center and shelter for the homeless.

The Glen Mar Silent Auction Committee led by Alison Zuzak worked with members of the Ellicott City-based faith community to gather and package items for over 100 baskets for the silent auction. The beautifully decorated baskets were on display in the church for the congregation to view in between Sunday services.

Calling all veterans. The Howard County Veterans and Military Families Commission will host a Veterans Resource Fair on Tuesday, May 19, from 5 to 8:45 p.m., at the Miller Branch Library, 9421 Frederick Road in Ellicott City. Although geared towards Howard County veterans, all veterans are invited to attend this free event.

Veterans will have an opportunity to talk face-to-face with more than 25 businesses, organizations and nonprofits dedicated to providing veteran services, support and jobs.

The following businesses and organizations will attend the fair: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Mobile Vet Van, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Maryland's Commitment to Veterans, Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations, One Stop Career Centers, Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs, Outreach and Advocacy Program, Howard County Department of Social Services, Easter Seals, Wounded Warrior Project, Neighbor Ride, the American Legion and the VFW, Maryland State Bar Association, Veterans History Project and Small Business Administration.

Attention adult cupcake lovers, coupon clippers and home gardeners, this week the Howard County Library's Miller Branch is offering three free classes that might interest you.

On Monday, May 18, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., learn the techniques and tools of home food preservation with Karen Basinger, University of Maryland Health, Nutrition, and Wellness educator at the Library's Grow It! Eat It! Preserve It! seminar.

On Tuesday, May 19, from 7 to 8 p.m., the Wow! Cupcakes class will teach you the tricks to making stunning cake toppers from household candies. All supplies provided.

On Wednesday, May 20, from 2 to 4 p.m., bring your clipped coupons to swap with other thrifty shoppers at the Coupon Swap class. Only valid, unexpired coupons accepted.

Don't miss Silhouette Stages's production of "Godspell" on May 15 through 17 and May 22 through 24 at Slayton House in the Wilde Lake Village Center. Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees are at 3 p.m.

Directed by Stephen Michael Deininger with musical direction by Robin Trenner and choreography by Katie Sheldon, this production of the 1971 Broadway hit musical will include modernized versions of the classic score including the iconic "Day by Day" song.

Leading the cast are Andrew Worthington as Jesus and Rich Greenslit as John the Baptist/Judas. Also featured in the cast are Kory Twit, Mary Kramer,Taylor Washington, Matt Wetzel, Clare Kneebone,, Thomas Ogar, Adeline Sutter and Samantha McEwen.
