Young musicians take a bow at Kennedy Center [Ellicott City]

Members of the Baltimore Youth Symphony Orchestra who performed at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage included Reece Updike, left, and Keegan McCardell.

On Feb. 6, Centennial High School trumpet player Reece Updike and Burleigh Manor Middle School french horn player Keegan McCardell performed at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage in Washington as members of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras.

For the past three years, the Ellicott City students and BYSO members have had the opportunity to play side-by-side in rehearsals with the BSO, receive coaching from BSO musicians and Maestra Marin Alsop, and attend master classes with world-renown guest artists.

Although the BSYO holds an annual May audition in search of the most talented student musicians in the Mid-Atlantic region, only 210 students are chosen to fill the three BYSO orchestral ensembles.

This year, according to BSYO's Alicia Kosack, 75 Howard County students, including Updike and McCardell, were offered membership in the BYSO — a testament to the outstanding music education programs in Howard County schools.
