It's no secret that the environment is a priority in Elkridge, with organizations like the Howard County Conservancy at Belmont popping up in our community.
However, now the school system is getting in on the act by making outdoor learning a priority in its curriculum. One of the ways that we can see this push is through Rockburn Elementary School's addition of an outdoor classroom to its facilities.
Not only is the classroom special because it is outdoors, but also because it was built by a local Eagle Scout, Patrick Lumsden, of Howard High School as a legacy to his community. Patrick completed the project with the help of adult associates and some of his troop members.
Rockburn's student green team, We Care, had a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, April 30, for its beautiful new outdoor classroom. Patrick Lumsden was an honored guest. The green team is an environmentally active group of students who get the job done for their school.
A special thanks goes out to Barry Polinsky for connecting the We Care green team with Patrick and the Rockburn PTA for help with fundraising as well as procurement of materials for the project.
