Library and Giving Circle have something to offer [Elkridge]

Now that the weather is getting warmer, summer programs are gearing up and the focus of this week's featured program is self-improvement and leadership skills for Howard County girls. If you don't meet the requirements for Journey 2015, you can always find edification at our local Elkridge Branch Library. Read on for details.

First, you can check out Appreciating Art Through Fiction, a program for adults at the Elkridge Branch Library. Explore the fiction collection's artistic side with novels about Edgar Degas, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, and Édouard Manet, which feature colorful works of art. Discover the lives of artists, their subjects, and specific art styles and techniques. Come join the fun on Thursday, April 23, from 7 to 8 p.m..

Second, on Thursday, May 21, from 7 to 8 p.m., the Elkridge Library will present "Tales of the Tudors." Go immerse yourself in a good story and discover several novels written about Tudor England through the eyes of notable women, such as Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I. No registration is required; but, you can get more information by calling 410-313-5077.

Journey 2015 is still accepting applications for its summer program. The Women's Giving Circle of Howard County Has awarded a grant to Maryland Leadership Workshops Inc. (MLW) for the operation of Journey, its residential summer camp for girls during the summer of 2015. The camp will include 25 girls who will be entering 8th or 9th grade in the fall of 2015.

The Women's Giving Circle is an organization of women philanthropists dedicated to addressing the needs of women and girls in Howard County. MLW has been providing leadership training programs for middle and high school students in the State of Maryland for over 55 years.

Journey will run from Sunday, July 12, to Saturday, July 18, on the campus of Washington College in Chestertown. The girls will live in the college dorms, eat in the college cafeteria, and experience a collegiate atmosphere during the week-long program. Components of the Journey program will include: workshops on empowerment and motivation, communication, decision making skills, group dynamics, self-awareness, goal setting, and conflict resolution, small and large group projects for girls to apply and get feedback on their leadership and interpersonal skills, one-on-one interactions between staff and girls to address specific areas of growth for the individual and identify an action plan for post-site implementation and recreational activities such as swimming and athletics and team building games and activities, including a confidence course.

Applicants should have previous experience in leading peers, a willingness to try new experiences in a safe environment, and a desire to serve the community. Applications may be obtained at http://www.mlw.org and will also be available in guidance offices at Howard County middle schools.
