If you find yourself needing more out of public education than being in a position to support it, these next events are for you.

The Elkridge Branch of the Howard County Library System is offering its workshop on downloading ebooks to borrow from its elibrary. Come to the branch on Feb. 19 from 7 to 8 p.m. to learn more about how to take advantage of this invaluable resource.

Additionally, the library system is sponsoring a reading of Nina Raine's "Tribes," the 2014-15 book selection and award-winning play about belonging, family, deafness and the limits of language. There will be afternoon and evening readings multiple times beginning on Monday, Feb. 23, in the Smith Theatre of Howard County Community College. See hclibrary.org for times and details or call 443-518-1420.

As the Howard County Library System celebrates 75 years of serving the community, each branch, including our own Elkridge Library, will be offering commemorative library cards. There is no charge to convert your old library card to the new one, which features a picture of the Elkridge Branch at dusk. There is even a social media contest linked to the cards with free tickets to the 75th Anniversary Gala for the winner.

Everyone who posts a selfie with their favorite commemorative card to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and/or tumblr using the hashtag #HCLS75 will be eligible. A random winner will be selected from all posts made by midnight Friday, February 20, 2015. Posts must display one of the six new commemorative cards and use #HCLS75. The winner will be drawn on Saturday, Feb. 21, and posted to all HCLS social media sites.
