Array of January events slated at Elkridge library [Elkridge]

January is the time that many of us choose to make changes in our lives. If you didn't make a resolution this year, consider trying something new or expanding your use of library materials.

Ring in the New Year with the Elkridge Branch Library as it presents HCLS Now!, a program designed to introduce online research materials such as eBooks, eAudiobooks, eMagazines and more. Discover your gateway to free, on-demand, self-directed education. This program is for all ages and takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 7 to 8 p.m.

In addition to this first installment of HCLS Now!, there are other dates that focus on other materials so don't forget to check the website or call the branch for more details.

Are you a teen or do you know a teen who is searching to express him or herself through a work of original fiction? If so, don't let your aspiring author miss this series of workshops hosted by the Elkridge Branch Library.

Celebrate the power of stories and your imagination. Learn to craft well-developed characters, setting and real dialogue. Create conflict and explore the basics of plotting in your writer's notebook. Hone your skills through peer coaching. All of this and more will push you along the path of the wordsmith; but, registration is required so contact the library at 410-313-5077 to reserve your spot.

Maybe you prefer to transform yourself into a character rather than writing your own. If so, the Novel Cosplay gathering may be for you. Create a costume to represent a favorite character and wear it to have your chance at winning a prize. Enter alone or with friends. Brief skits are a welcome aspect of this event so come on out and shine on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 2 to 4 p.m.

For kids, the world of books is a new and fun adventure that they get to experience with the help of an older reader. The Elkridge library would like to give your little one the chance to experience the book club feel on a level that is appropriate for them. Come read a picture book and stay for a discussion and related activities to build the book club skill on Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

Finally, don't miss the chance to learn the Japanese art of paper folding. In Origami Magic, participants ages 6 and older will take a single sheet of paper and transform it into something truly amazing. This workshop is for beginners takes place on Friday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. and requires a ticket. Call the branch at 410-313-5077 for more details.
