Everyone at River Hill High is excited at the news. Richard McCready is a quarterfinalist for the Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation. There were more than 4,500 nominations from all 50 states. There are now 213 music teachers from 194 cities across 42 states.
The Music Educator Award was established to recognize current teachers who demonstrate committment and have made a lasting contribution to music education. Next, there will be only 10 finalists including one winner. Finalists and the winner receive cash awards, as do their schools.

If you enjoy foods from all over the world, you might want to attend the International Food Festival at New Hope Church on Hall Shop Road May 17, 1-4 p.m. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the New Hope Mahatos School in Mozambique. The cost is $10 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for those 5 and younger.

After earning her PhD in computer science and engineering and working 25 years, Margaret McMahon is using her experience and education to do family history research. She has also authored two books, "A Week of Genealogy" and "A Weekend of Genealogy."
She will speak on "The Use of DNA in Genealogy" at the Howard County Genealogical Society meeting at the Bain Center on May 20, 7-9 p.m. Arrive at 7 p.m. to socialize, browse and enjoy free refreshments. At 7:15 p.m. members share their research. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m.with the lecture at 8 p.m. It's all free and everyone is welcome. The meeting is canceled if the senior center is closed that date.

Clarksville Middle School will host its fourth annual Fun Run/Walk on May 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is to promote health and wellness in our community.
After the CMS Run/Walk you are invited to stick around to visit the Enrichment Fair from 7 to 8:30 p.m. There will be hands-on activities and a chance to see what students have been designing and creating over the course of the school year. CMS student achievement is always impressive.
To coincide with the close of the Bootleggers exhibit currently at the Howard County Historical Society Museum there will be a 1920s speakeasy party. Bootleggers Paradise II: A Wiskey Tasting Event will be held May 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be representatives from Whiskey America and a jazz band, the Will Fischer Orchestra.
Tickets are $60 per person and include tasting five premium whiskeys, light fare refreshments and music. They suggest you dust off your flapper costumes and begin practicing the Charleston to step back into the 1920s.
