Haviland Mill Road officially county's 75th scenic road [Clarksville]

Are you seeing signs of spring, signs of progress, signs of the times? Signs are everywhere. Some are even printed for you to read.

Drive along Haviland Mill Road and you will see a sign declaring that this is now officially the 75th Howard County Scenic Road. You may also notice one of the old homes beautifully restored by the Farquhars. Enjoy the bucolic views while you can. There is always the possibility of development changing the view.

Drive along Brighton Dam Road and you will see signs inviting you to come help honor first responders. A special service will be held at Triadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church on May 21 at 11 a.m. All are welcome.

The grand opening of the farmers market at the River Hill Garden Center is set for Saturday, May 14, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Overflow parking is available at Linden-Linthicum United Methodist church. For more information, go to www.riverhillfarmersmarket.com.

When you come to Basket Bingo, you might want to bring along store credits and gift cards you aren't going to use. RE-Gift them. This is another on-going fundraiser for Neighbor Ride. The Howard County Historical Society invites you to the Great Gatsby Summer Soiree at Oakdale, the Governor Warfield Mansion in Woodbine, June 4, 7-11 p.m. The Roaring '20s fundraiser includes live music by the Columbia Jazz Band, champagne, finger foods and drinks, a whiskey tasting by Whiskey America, cigar tasting, dance lessons, best costume contest and more. Do you love seeing model train displays at Christmas and even other times of the year? Then, you're going to love this.

The historic Ellicott City Inc. Operating Model Train Display is celebrating the 186th anniversary of railroading in America at Mt. Ida Mansion on May 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Your admission includes the operating display of the New Windsor 1.5" Scale Group's exact replicas of some of America's most important trains. There will be displays by the B&O Historical Society and Museum and the Western Maryland Historical Society. A tour of the mansion and visit to the oldest B&O train station will be part of the experience.

For some, this will be a journey down memory lane. For younger visitors, it will be a glimpse into our area's important role in American history. Admission is $5 for adults and free for children under age 12.

Joanne Stango is spreading the word. They've done it again. The Triadelphia Sparks team of Sarah and Mimi Klingbeil, Kari and Andrew Remmers, Rose and Caleb Froelic and Christopher Berglund returned from Phoenix, Arizona, with a first place trophy in Pathfinder Bible Experience. Teams from all over North America participated in the competition.

Many thanks go to parents and especially to coach Sharon Crews, who does an amazing job of helping youngsters ages 10-16 memorize large portions of Scripture and understand the meaning of the content.
