River Hill teen committee hosting painting instruction class [Clarksville]

As spring arrives, the calendar is blooming with local events.

An instructional painting class sponsored by the River Hill Teen Advisory Committee will be held on Saturday, March 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., at Claret Hall. Taking inspiration from Bob Ross, the iconic painter and TV show host, the event will teach participants how to paint a landscape. Tickets are $5 and include the canvas, all painting supplies, snacks and drinks. Space is limited and tickets must be purchased in advance at Claret Hall. The event is for ages 12 and older. Proceeds will be donated to Arts Every Day, a non-profit organization which inspires students and enhances learning.

Learn how to Use Citizen Science to Guide Your Gardening Practices on Wednesday, March 21, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Citizen scientists perform tasks such as counting and recording the number of birds or butterflies or noting the date when flowers begin to bloom. Local Master Gardener Ann Coren will explore the dozens of citizen science projects that are begging for backyard data. Coren’s talk will focus on Project Bud Burst, Project Feeder Watch, Monarch Watch and Million Pollinator Gardens. The event will be held in the Clarksville Commons Community Room. The River Hill Community Association is looking for volunteers to participate in the Columbia Wide Clean-Up Day on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Families, Scout troops, neighbors and friends are encouraged to sign up to collect trash from open spaces and along area pathways. Service hours may be earned. Children under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Register via email riverhill@villageofriverhill.org or call 410-531-1749 with name, phone number and number of participants in the group. Supplies will be distributed at Claret Hall on the morning of the event.

Coffee, cupcakes and poetry—what a combination to start off the day! Kupcakes & Co. will host a coffeehouse event with Zeke’s Coffee on Saturday, March 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Zeke’s Coffee is a small batch coffee roastery, specializing in organic, fair trade and sustainable beans. A poet from With Ink: Typewriter Poetry will create poems while attendees wait for complimentary coffee tastings. Special Java Jolt cupcakes will be available for purchase. The event will take place on the Clarksville Common plaza, weather permitting. The alternate location is inside Kupcakes & Co’s shop.

The Oakridge Community Church is collecting textiles to help fund an upcoming mission trip to Croatia. Drop off any unwanted clothes, shoes, towels, rugs, blankets, sheets or curtains in any condition in tied bags. A collection bin will be in the church parking lot at 6120 Day Long Lane through March 25. If you have questions, contact Aurelia at fundraising@oakridgecc.org.

The River Hill High School Indoor Yard Sale will be held on Saturday, April 21, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. New vendors are welcome and early bird tables are only $25 each. Please email RHYardSale@gmail.com for more information.
