Howard, state police arrest four during weekend sobriety checkpoint in Savage

Howard County and Maryland State police made four arrests Friday night through early Saturday morning during a sobriety checkpoint in Savage.

Three drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and police said they arrested a fourth driver after learning he had several outstanding warrants and was driving on a suspended license. The man was also given a civil citation for having under 10 grams of marijuana.

During the checkpoint, located on southbound Route 1 between Howard Street and Gorman Road, officers kept an eye out for impaired driving, alongside representatives from Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, who gave drivers handouts with DUI facts and statistics. Police said 995 cars passed through the checkpoint.

Sobriety checkpoints are conducted by police as part of the Checkpoint Strikeforce Campaign, which is funded by a Maryland Highway Safety Office grant. As Howard police continue to take drunk drivers off roads throughout the county, officers ask residents to stay alert, report impaired. drivers by calling 911 and designate a sober driver or avoid alcohol if they plan to drive.
