Howard veteran prosecutor appointed to judgeship

Veteran prosecutor Lisa Louise Broten has been appointed to judgeship on the District Court of Maryland for Howard County, according to state's attorney's office spokesman Wayne Kirwan.

Gov. Larry Hogan appointed Broten on December 17, Kirwan said, following the retirement of Judge Sue-Ellen Hantman in April. She is expected to be sworn-in on January 8, 2016.

"During my travels throughout the county and state, people often tell me they believe that we have one of the finest state's attorney's offices in the state, with a strong tradition of hiring proficient attorneys who are strong advocates for the law and our citizens," county State's Attorney Dario J. Broccolino said in a statement provided by Kirwan. "Lisa Broten is an outstanding addition to the court. She embodies the highest attributes of all of our prosecutors-- knowledge of the law, critical thinking, good judgment and a desire to seek the truth and see that justice is served."

After becoming a county prosecutor in 1998, Broten held several leadership positions, Kirwan said, including chief of the District Court Division. Her career in misdemeanor and felony trials has spanned from murder, rape, child abuse, carjacking, robbery and burglary cases, and Broten currently acts as a trial team leader in her work with the Family Crime/Sexual Offense Unit.

Kirwan also noted Broten's significant educational background prior to her work with the state's attorney's office, such as graduating cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park as well as earning her juris doctorate from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. Broten is also a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the Howard County Bar Association and the Howard County Bar Foundation.

In 2005 and 2011, Kirwan said, Broten received the President's Award for her service to the Howard County Bar Association. The prosecutor continues to share her experiences in government as an instructor for the Howard County Police Department's Police Academy and an adjunct faculty member at Howard Community College, teaching criminal justice courses.

Broten currently lives in Columbia with her husband and daughter.
