Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue swimmers rescued two children from the Patapsco River Sunday evening after they fell in the water while fishing near Daniels Dam in Ellicott City.
According to on-call department spokesman Adam Nolder, units were called around 5 p.m. for a water rescue just south of the dam after the children accidentally fell in the water. While driving to the scene, responders learned the children were able to swim to a small island in the middle of the river.
"The rescue swimmers got in their swift water rescue gear and performed a shallow water crossing, which is basically when two swimmers are tied to ropes onshore and wade through the water over to the island," Nolder said. "Once on the island, we put the kids in helmets and personal flotation devices and then carried them across the water on the far side of the island that was a little less swift."
Paramedics then wrapped the children in warm clothes and blankets, Nolder said.
The children were taken to Howard County General Hospital for non life-threatening injuries and evaluations for hypothermia.
