Mobern Lighting, a 70-year-old Howard County lighting company, moved from North Laurel into a new 80,000 square-foot facility in Jessup Friday.
The company employs approximately 100 people and provides energy-efficient lighting for businesses, governments and other organizations across the nation, according to a news release.
"We have been active members of the Howard County community for decades and we were delighted to find a new location that will allow us to better serve our clients not only here in the Mid-Altantic region, but across the country," said Mobern President Bill Stone in a news release.
The new building, which cost $1 million, includes approximately 20 loading bays, higher ceilings for increased storage and is equipped with energy-efficient lighting technologies throughout, the company said.
Earlier this year, County Executive Ken Ulman and the Board to Promote Self Sufficiency gave Mobern a "Hire Power" award for the company's efforts to help develop the local workforce, creating opportunities for socially and economically challenged workers.
"This move represents a major investment in Howard County for Mobern," Ulman said in a statement. "Manufacturing and distribution are growing segments of our local economy and we are doing all we can to preserve and grow these types of jobs. Mobern is a terrific partner and we're glad they're growing here."
Larry Twele, the CEO of the Howard County Economic Development Authority, added: "Mobern is a tremendous asset to our community because the company provides manufacturing jobs and perhaps more importantly, training that helps the workers improve their ability to advance in the job market."
