Howard County Times wins local journalism awards

The Howard County Times won 16 awards, including two Best of Shows, in the 2014 editorial contest results announced Friday by the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association.

The awards were won in the category of non-daily newspapers with a circulation between 10,000 and 20,000. Nearly 2,000 entries were received in this year's contest across all categories for daily and non-daily newspapers.

Kathleen Reynolds won Best of Show for sports page design for a sports section cover for a boys basketball preview, "Ready to throw down" ; and Carolyn Kelemen won Best of Show for arts/entertaining reporting with her story, "Bald Ballerina," how 23-year-old dancer Maggie Kudirka did not let cancer stop her from performing as Snow Queen in the "Nutcracker."

Staff coverage of the January 2014 shooting of two store employees at the Mall in Columbia won first place for spot news; and Jon Sham, Luke Lavoie and Amanda Yeager won first place for multimedia storytelling (news) with coverage of the local community rebuilding as the mall reopened.

Other first place awards went to Jen Rynda for sports photo with her cover image for the "Ready to throw down" page design; and Sham for multimedia story telling (sports) for his Oakland Mills basketball all-access package.
