Howard County police identify pedestrian hit by county Recreation and Parks vehicle

Howard County police Friday identified a pedestrian injured Thursday afternoon in a collision with a Howard County Recreation and Parks vehicle at the intersection of Long Gate Parkway and Wheatfield Way. in Ellicott City.

Police said Jian Zheng, 17, of Ellicott City, entered the roadway at Wheatfield Way and was struck around 2:50 p.m. by the marked county vehicle, a 2015 Chevy Silverado heading south on Long Gate Parkway. Police said no other vehicles were involved.

The driver, Jacob George Maisel, 22, of West Friendship, and the second employee, who was in the front passenger seat, were not injured.

Zheng remains in critical condition at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, police said Friday.

While the investigation is ongoing, police said they believe the driver was not at fault as multiple witnesses reported Zheng walked onto the roadway despite the traffic signal.

Southbound Long Gate Parkway between Montgomery Road and Route 100 was closed during the investigation.
