I enjoyed the article in the Howard County Times on "Volunteers Taking Stock of Forgotten Cemeteries." As a Howard County resident for almost 50 years, I am happy to see that there is an interest in historical burial sites in the county. I occasionally see small plots all by themselves, not a part of a cemetery, and wonder who cares for them.
It is very upsetting to think these sites fall into disrepair. The idea of volunteers caring for burial sites, that are not under perpetual care of a cemetery, is a great idea and comforting to know that someone will preserve them out of respect for the deceased.
Planning and Zoning should never allow development to encroach on such a sacred place. We at least owe our predecessors that respect. To think that anyone could vandalize a burial site is very disturbing. If not, it should be a criminal offense. Where is the respect for our predecessors and our history?
