Golf
The First Tee of Howard County 13th annual charity outing is Aug. 8 at Fairways Hills Golf Club. Lunch and dinner is provided. There is a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start. First Tee is seeking foursomes to participate, and would also like the support of local businesses in the community for sponsorship purposes. Funds raised go to providing the First Tee experience to almost 1,000 children. Tickets are $200 and can be purchased online at thefirstteehowardcounty.org or at 410-730-1114.
Registration is still open for the First Tee of Howard County this fall. The program provides classes for students between the ages of 5-17. The sessions are eight weeks and range from one to two hours long, depending on the age. Clubs are provided, if necessary. Interested individuals may register online at thefirstteehowardcounty.org.
Lacrosse
Zingos Lacrosse Club will hold open tryouts for the 2014-15 season. This year, the Club will have teams for high school graduating years 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 (U15), 2020 (U13), 2021 (U13), 2022/23 (U11) and U9 age groups. Biking
Volunteer registration is now open for the 7th Annual 24 Hours of Booty Columbia. This year's charity cycling event is scheduled to roll on the Columbia Gateway Business Park loop from 2 p.m. Aug. 23 to 2 p.m. Aug. 24, when participants will be riding and raising funds to help fight cancer.
Approximately 170 volunteers are needed to support this year's Columbia ride in the following areas: packet pick-up, pre-event course preparation and maintenance, course marking/signage, food and beverage, campground management, hospitality, and parking and traffic control. Volunteer shifts are assigned in three- and four-hour increments, and opportunities are available for individuals and groups. Baseball
The Atholton Youth Recreation Association (AYRA) will conduct tryouts for the 2015 14U (players born after April 30, 2000) travel team on Aug. 10 from 1-3 p.m. at Atholton High School and Aug. 16 from 10-12 at Schooley Mill Park. The team will play in the spring MABA travel league as well as 3-4 tournaments throughout the season. The Thunder SC Juventus U15 boys team is looking for committed and hard working players to add to its roster for the 2014-15 season. This is a NCSL Division 1 team located in Columbia. The team practices three times a week and plays two to three tournaments each season in addition to the regular NCSL league play.
