Glenelg hands Mt. Hebron field hockey its first loss

Stephanie Asher scored one goal in each half, as Glenelg became the first team to beat Mt. Hebron this season. The Gladiators won Friday's fast-paced game, 2-1.

Glenelg's victory creates a logjam at the top of the county standings. Mt. Hebron, Glenelg, Centennial and Marriotts Ridge all now have one county loss each. Atholton and River Hill each have two county losses and Long Reach has three.

The small margin of separation between the teams will make for an interesting final three weeks of the season.

Glenelg held a 1-0 halftime lead, but Mt. Hebron got on the scoreboard early in the second half when Molly Bishop sent a flat pass across the front of the goal and Ally Unkenholz drove the ball over the goal line.

Mt. Hebron had more penalty corner opportunities (10-4) than Glenelg. In fact, they had three in the final 2 minutes of the game. They got shots off on their corners, but not ones accurate enough to score.

Asher got what proved to be the game-winning goal on a scramble in front of Mt. Hebron keeper Chachi Kelehan (five saves). Kelehan blocked several shots in the sequence but Glenelg kept sending the ball back at her. Megan Taylor's reverse stick drive was headed toward goal and Asher was there to nudge it across the line.
