Glenelg Country shuts out IND, 3-0, in field hockey

The game is 60-minutes long, but Howard tried to think of it 10-minute segments. Still looking for their first win of the season, Howard stayed with Glenelg until there was just under 10 minutes to play and the score was tied, 3-3.

That's when Glenelg took over, allowing Howard only a few very brief opportunities to cross midfield.

"Megan (Taylor) and Stef (Asher) essentially took the game over," said Glenelg coach Ginger Kincaid after her team won, 5-3.

Asher had the final two goals of the game.

After failing to convert a pair of penalty corners into goals in the game's opening minutes, Glenelg's first tally was set up by midfielder Morgan Philie's long aerial. Asher passed the ball to Taylor.

The two forwards repeated the sequence just before halftime.

Mia Astran had the other Glenelg goal.

While Glenelg had the first scoring chances of the game, Howard got the first goal when Annette Jarosz scored off an assist from Allyson Sloan.

After Glenelg tied the score, 1-1, Cailey Tolson, assisted by Maddie Regal, put Howard in front, 2-1.

The halftime score was 2-2.

Glenelg went ahead on Astran's goal, but 90 seconds later Tolson scored to knot the game again.

"They were tenacious," Philie said.

Howard called its second timeout of the half, but when play restarted, Asher scored with stunning quickness. The Gladiators' forwards and midfield then dug in and essentially kept possession for the rest of the game.

"I'm very proud of my girls. They played their hearts out," said Howard coach Kristen Vance. Awaiting the birth of her first child, Vance was coaching in between contractions.

"We've had a rough beginning," Vance said.

The Lions' Betty Lang tournament was cancelled when two teams dropped out. The Glenelg game, which was postponed from last week, caused Howard to play back-to-back. (The Lions lost to River Hill, 1-0, on Monday.)

"We really haven't gotten our season going, but things are clicking now," Vance said.

"We're getting better and I think we'll do better as our season goes on," said Howard's Megan Green.
