The speakers are Frederick Douglass High School teacher Amanda Brown and Crystal Flowers, director of Little Flowers Child Development Center in Baltimore, who will discuss the plight and challenges young children endure in the face of increasing civic tensions.
During their presentations, you will learn about the current issues that the teachers and students face each day in impoverished Baltimore City schools. A question-and-answer period will follow their talks. The church is at 10755 Scaggsville Road. For more information, go to the church's web site at www. In a column published on April 8, 2013, I wrote about a young Highland lady named Rebekah Araujo who, at the time of the column was an 8th grader, an avid soccer fanatic and a young lady who was out to change the video gaming world. She started a petition drive on Change.org asking EA Sports to "include female characters in their soccer games".
Fast-forward two years. Her dad, Roberto, wanted to provide an update about Rebekah: she is now a sophomore at River Hill High School and a member of the Lady Hawks JV Soccer club. Her petition was eventually closed but not before having received almost 50,000 signatures that, together with two other similar petitions, totaled over 100,000 signatures worldwide.
In an unrelated story, EA Sports announced that in September, FIFA 16 will be available which will include 12 women's national teams. Roberto said that his daughter will not get any credit but she is "So Happy!" Hmm. According to a blog post on chartio.com (chartio.com/blog/2013/12/the-data-behind-online-activism), the average number of signatures per petition is 391. Do you think she got their attention? Not sure.
Happy birthday to Charlie Gait.
