The League of Women Voters is a citizens' organization that promotes participation in government at the national, state and local levels. The league hosts candidate forums every election season and advocates for legislation that meets its members' priorities.

In Maryland, the LWV has 14 local chapters and more than 1,200 members.

Schnackenberg has served with both the Maryland and Howard County chapters of the League of Women Voters in various capacities. She was action chair of the state league for four years, where she was responsible for putting out the group's biweekly legislative action newsletter, Report from State Circle, and where she oversaw testimony on over 80 bills this past legislative session.

She has also previously served as co-president of the Howard County League of Women Voters.

In addition to Schnackenberg's election, four other Howard County residents – Betsy Singer, Andrea Gruhl, Betty Harries and Betsy Grater – were chosen for directorships by the league's members.
