Rebecca Amani-Dove, communications director for the Howard County Public School System, on Thursday confirmed she is leaving the school district for another job.

Amani-Dove will be the new Director of Acquisition Marketing for Discovery Education, an arm of Silver Spring-based Discovery Communications that sells digital instructional supplements.

She told the Howard County Times the career move had nothing to do with recent turmoil in the school system following revelations that Glenwood Middle School, in western Howard, has struggled with mold since 2010. Some parents had called for Amani-Dove to apologize after she wrote an op-ed defending the school system's handling of the issue.

"This other opportunity presented itself and it was the right choice for my family," she said of the job at Discovery.

Amani-Dove has worked for the school system for four years. Before being appointed communications director by HCPSS Superintendent Renee Foose in 2012, she was the director of student assessment and program evaluation for HCPSS.

She called the decision to leave "bittersweet.

"I've felt very privileged to be a part of the leadership team for this school district. I continue to be a strong supporter of Vision 2018 and the strategic direction that's being led under [HCPSS Superintendent] Dr. [Renee] Foose," she said. "It was an honor and a privilege to work for her and as a part of this school system, and I'm extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity."

Amani-Dove's last day with the school system is Sept. 28. Her interim replacement will be Brian Bassett, a multimedia projects specialist with HCPSS's communications department, until a new communications director is hired.
